France, Third Republic (1870-1940). Set of two Artillery Officer's sabers, model 1822/99. - The first is made by "Coulaux & Cie Klingenthal" with scabbard. Gilded cast brass mounting (remains) with two secondary rails adorned with a long palmette at the base, beaded cap topped by a dome-button, edged with a laurel leaf frieze and short tail, rosette joint arch adorned with a few leaves at the top. Spindle in brass filigree horn. Beak-shaped top decorated with a seven-pointed palmette surmounted by two small acanthus leaves arranged in a cross. Natural leather tie. Stained white blade with traces of oxidation towards the tip, slightly curved, with hollow front and flat back, marked "Coulaux & Cie Klingenthal". Steel scabbard, with one suspension ring and asymmetrical stinger, with traces of oxidation. 104.5 cm (Blade 90 cm). (Wear and tear, fuse horn damaged with small chips, watermark damaged, blade tang drifted from pommel. As is). - For the second, privately made "FBD" for François Delacour & Backes, without scabbard. Gilded cast brass mounting (remains) with two secondary rails adorned with a long palmette at their base, beaded cap topped by a dome-button, edged with a laurel leaf frieze and short tail, rosette joint arch adorned with a few leaves at the top. Horn spindle with brass filigree (filigree missing). Beak-shaped top decorated with a seven-pointed palmette surmounted by two small acanthus leaves arranged in a cross. Natural leather tie. Stained white blade with traces of oxidation towards the tip, slightly curved, with hollow front and flat back with manufacturer's logo on the heel "FBD" for François Delacour & Backes. 107 cm (Blade 91 cm).
