At the Regiment. (France. Circa 1900) In the Regiment. (France. Circa 1900). Wooden box, size 21 x 14.2 x 11.4 cm. The interior is divided into two compartments. The first contains twenty-four cards, oblong format 17.3 x 10.9 cm, rounded corners; the second a cloth bag filled with ninety turned wooden counters, numbered from 1 to 90. Lotto game dedicated to the military life of French conscripts. On the front of each card is a color lithograph, each numbered from 1 to 24, framed on three sides by numbered squares. Each lithograph evokes an episode in the military life of young Frenchmen, from Le Tirage au sort (No.1) to La Revue du Général (No.24), including La Cantine, Le Lavabo, La Corvée de quartier... in short, everything that made this military, republican and courtly interlude so charming. The drawing of lots for conscripts had been instituted by the law of December 29, 1804: 30 to 35% of conscripts then completed their five-year service. In 1889, service was reduced to three years, but it was then possible to pay for a replacement, which only concerned wealthy families. The law of May 29, 1905 prohibited replacements and instituted a two-year service for all young Frenchmen declared fit.
