Description

Belgium, circa 1850-1870. Bear cap for a horse grenadier of the royal guard or royal gendarme. Cowhide carcass trimmed with teddy bear fur sewn edge to edge. Small round visor in black leather edged with black leather piping. Inner cap in black leather with seven wolf teeth. The front badge, plume, cockade pompom and brass chain chinstrap are missing. The "cul de singe" embroidery is missing. Presence of a paper manufacturer's label on the back of the headpiece. Worn. Comes with its cylindrical khaki-painted sheet metal carrying case, stencilled in white with the number "84". (Uncommon, small traces of oxidation and rust bloom on the carrying case. Good condition). Front height 36 cm. Height. Back 38 cm.
