France, War of 1870-71. Slice of Prussian war bread, captured during the siege of Neuf-Brisach, September 3, 1873. Presented in a small cardboard box bearing a handwritten inscription "Pain de Munition (Prussien) Manutention de Neuf-Brisach. 3. 9bre 1873". 12 x 6 cm. (Patina of age. Fairly good condition). Note: Neuf-Brisach (68600, Alsace), whose citadel was built by Vauban around 1700, was captured on October 6, 1870, and came under heavy artillery fire from November 2 to 10, before surrendering to the enemy on November 11.
