Description

France, Louis-Philippe (1830-1848). Dueling or percussion pistol signed "GAUVAIN, 47 Boulevard du Mont Parnasse à Paris". Cal. 14 mm approx. All metal parts with small gray patina, spotted in places. Octagonal damascus barrel, rifled, with sight and rear sight, signed "GAUVAIN, 47 BOULEVARD DU MONT PARNASSE A PARIS" on the upper side and numbered "10" on the barrel. Flat-body percussion lock signed "GAUVAIN A PARIS", chased with scrolls and line-decorated on the rim. Flat-bodied hammer chased with en suite decoration. Die-cut steel fittings chased with en suite decorations. All screw heads chased. Renaissance-style walnut stock with pointed steel cap and trigger guard with finger rest. Good, functional mechanism, with two clear, play-free cocking notches. Inside barrel with minor surface oxidation and deep scratches. 41 cm (barrel 24 cm). (Age-related wear and patina, tiny crack on the stock behind the trigger guard return, four small knocks on the right-hand side of the barrel, to be cleaned. Fairly good condition). Note: Alfred GAUVAIN (1801-1889), harquebusier in Paris, based at 47 Boulevard du Mont Parnasse in Paris. He took part in the Paris Exhibitions in 1844, 1849 (silver medal), 1855 and the Universal Exhibition in London in 1851 (gold medal).
