Description

France, 2nd World War. Series of 8 watercolor plates produced during the liberation of Châteauroux (Dept. 36, Indre) by Michèle COMTE, a teenager, in the summer of 1944. One plate depicts the maquisards and FFI who took part in the liberation of Châteauroux in August and September 1944, another French officers of the 2nd DB, while the others show numerous German soldiers and vehicles camouflaged with branches in convoy (passage of troops, notably the famous Elster column from the South-West, which passed through Châteauroux on September 6, 1944). Two unfinished plates. Signed "MC" lower right. The 8 watercolors are presented in modern wooden glass frames numbered 1 to 8, and come with a photocopy of a typed note made and signed by the author in May 2018, now deceased, entitled "La débâcle à Châteauroux 39 - 45", explaining and describing each plate. A sympathetic account by a Châteauroux teenager of the events of the summer of '44 (Minor foxing. Good condition). Sight size: 23 x 29 cm. Frame size 37 x 43 cm.
