Description

France, Reign of Louis XVI (1774-1789). Cavalry flintlock pistol model 1777 1st type by Manufacture de St Étienne, circa 1780. Cal. 18 mm. With original dragoon hook. All metal parts in white polished finish. Smooth, slightly stained, round barrel with thunderbolt side panels and "80" for 1780, then stamped with a crowned fleur-de-lys and "B" in cursive for "Joseph BERTHEAS", controller of cannons from 1777 to 1785. The tailstock is marked "M 1777". Flintlock lock marked "St Étienne", hallmarked "L" under large crown for Étienne LAMBERT, controller from 1777 to 1784. Cast brass fittings, no hallmark. Walnut stock. Original nailhead steel ramrod, 1st type, hallmarked "2" under asterisk, present. Functional mechanism, with two clear, play-free cocking notches. Inside of barrel with minor surface oxidation. Complete. 34 cm (barrel 18.9 cm). (Wear and age patina, fine markings and hallmarks, four file strokes on the trigger representing victory marks.
