In August 1994, Shojo manga pioneer Machiko Satonaka sent a letter and petition signed by 488 Japanese, including 82 artists, to Disney Studios, asking them to acknowledge that they had been inspired by Tezuka's work. The latter denied any plagiarism of the original Japanese series, and even declared that they didn't know Osamu Tezuka, a fact ironically denounced by a specialist journalist: "If you were a car manufacturer and none of the designers in your company knew Honda, wouldn't you be worried?
