Snuff bottle; Beijing, China, Qing dynasty, nineteenth century. Glass. Presents a later period lid. Measurements: 6.5 x 4.5 x 2.5 cm. This type of snuff box became widespread from the seventeenth century to store snuff type tobacco introduced by the Portuguese throughout the previous century. Tobacco became widespread in China among the upper classes as a medicine for a wide range of ailments: asthma, throat ailments and the evil eye. As it became a fashion, small containers were created and were the object of profuse ornamentation, becoming, in some cases, true works of art. It has a later period cover.

AN AGATE ‘FARMER AND HORSE’ SNUFF BOTTLE, QING DYNASTY AN AGATE ‘FARMER AND HORSE’ SNUFF BOTTLE, QING DYNASTY China, 1644-1912. Well hollowed, of rounded square form, rising from a short, oval foot to a cylindrical neck with concave lip. The translucent stone of a creamy pale gray color with shadings of amber and opaque white inclusions, the latter cleverly utilized to depict a farmer settling his horse. Provenance: French trade. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and little nibbling to the mouth and foot. Weight: 60 g Dimensions: Height 55 mm. Diameter neck 24 mm and mouth 7.5 mm
