CHINA Rare porcelain plate with copper-red decoration and gold highlights depicting a Commedia dell'Arte character in the center, the wing decorated with four bats and chrysanthemum flowers on honeycomb motifs. Yongzheng period (1723-1735) Diam. 21.5 cm Our plate is reproduced in F et N Hervouet & Y. Bruneau. La porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à décor occidental. Flammarion Paris 1986 page 219 n°9.72 This decoration evokes a satire of the disasters of financial speculation in the 1720s, known as the "South Sea bubble", which led to the financial ruin of investors in Holland and England. A satirical work published in Amsterdam in 1720, "The Great Theatre of Folly", depicts the origin, progress and downfall of the "South Sea Bubble" in France, England and Holland. Engravings were used as models to be copied in China on porcelain.
