Maximilian I (1573-1651) Duke of Bavaria and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire granted the Free Imperial City of Isny the right to mint coins in 1507. The first coins were minted from 1508. The batzen is a silver coin that was widely used in the 16th century, particularly in southern Germany. Its value was roughly equivalent to 16 pfennigs. Cf. Landesmuseum Württemberg, inv. no.
