Description

GUENEBAULD Jean, Le Réveil de Chyndonax Dijon, Guyot, 1621. In-4°, 8 ffnch - 176 - 8 ffnch & 2 engraved plates hors-texte (paper uniformly and slightly foxed). Bound in full contemporary muted vellum. In 1598, in the vineyard of the physician Jean Guenebauld, near Dijon, a stone vat was discovered, whose Greek inscription indicated that the archdruid Chyndonax worshipped the goddess Mitra. The vat and the urn it contained were given to Cardinal de Richelieu, before finally being used as a drinking trough in a village priest's backyard. But at the time, this disturbing discovery revived interest in the Celts in Burgundy; its authenticity has since been questioned. First edition illustrated with an armorial plate featuring the anagram of Roger de Bellegarde, to whom the epistle is dedicated, a double plate showing the tomb and urn, and several woodcuts. Caillet calls this work "curious and sought-after".
