Princess Mathilde Bonaparte, daughter of Jérôme Bonaparte, niece of Napoleon I and wife of Anatole Demidoff, was a great patron of the arts and protector of artists. She and Charles Gounod enjoyed a long friendship, and he dedicated his opera Le Médecin malgré lui to her.
