Description

VITRUVE, Jean-Michel-Raymond-Ghislain Moreau de BIOUL, L'architecture de Vitruve, traduite en françois, avec des remarques Brussels, Adolphe Stapleaux, 1816 1 vol. in-4° : xxviii-563p., 28pl. Restored contemporary binding, green half-calf spine and corners, black label preserved. Nineteenth-century edition usually heavily pitted, here in very good condition inside. First edition of this translation by Jean-Michel Moreau de Bioul (1765-1835), who studied ancient architecture during a stay in Italy; this is the 3rd translation into French (1st in 1547 by Jean Martin, 2nd in 1673 by Claude Perrault) of this classic written around 25 BC. The plates are particularly interesting as they show the construction systems used at a time when the mechanical crane and the bulldozer did not exist in the dreams of any architect!
