Description

Johann Jacob SCHÜBLER, Sciagraphia Artis Tignariæ, Oder nutzliche Eröffnung zu der sichern, Nuremberg, Johann Trautners,17361 vol. in-4°: 6f., 148p., 42 of 44 plates (plates 35 and 36 missing). German Bradel boards, circa 1840. Spine and corners restored. Boards slightly rubbed. Provenance: handwritten bookplate dated 1841 on title page. The work of Schübler, architect and above all prolific theoretician of the German Baroque, is extensive and detailed. He was one of the first to provide complete details of the workmanship and dimensions, which is extremely useful for restoration work. To facilitate reading of the text and plates in parallel, the plates are mounted on very long tabs, making for an ideal layout. The work covers both structural work for buildings (timber-framed constructions and roofs) and civil engineering (bridge voussoirs, lifting equipment), enabling the author to propose all kinds of machines, including a fabric shredder for preparing paper pulp. It's worth noting that wooden gears undoubtedly saw their heyday and then their rapid decline, given their low manufacturing precision and rapid wear.
