As announced by the author, "this work should not be considered as a simple compilation of what is found scattered in various authors who have written on architecture; it is a work on a new plan, which is the result of more than thirty years of study, experiment and research into all parts of the art of building, both in ancient authors, many passages of which have been misinterpreted by translators and commentators, and through particular observations on ancient and modern constructions, which I had occasion to make on several journeys, including one to Italy at the expense of the Government, during the years 1783 and 1784" A fascinating book on architecture, covering both the styles and design of ancient and modern monuments and buildings, as well as very practical aspects such as plasters, cements, bricks, carpentry, etc. Rondelet is best known for having overseen the construction of the Pantheon on Mont Ste Geneviève, as Soufflot's pupil and then successor. His Treatise was so successful that it was published and expanded throughout the 19th century. See n°174 to 177.
