Description

Louis Amboise DUBUT, Architecture civile: maisons de ville et de campagne, de toutes formes et de tous genres, projetées pour être construites sur des terrains de différentes grandeurs Paris, J.-M. Eberhart, Paris, An XI [1802], 1 vol. in-folio: cover of 1st issue preserved, serving as title page, dated "Paris, An XI (1802)", 60pl. (half on Hollande paper). Contemporary tan half calf binding, worn headband, small circular cutout at bottom of spine, probably to remove a monogram. Very good condition. The work was announced as 144 pages, but ended up with only 89. In 1805, on his return from Rome, the author announced a second volume (prospectus at the Avery Library), which never saw the light of day. Here are the first 10 issues only, which it is rare to find in the freshness of the 1st printing. Louis-Ambroise Dubut (1769-1846), architect and former boarder in Rome, is known as Ledoux's only pupil. Following in the footsteps of Percier & Fontaine, Suys and Clochar, he published his projects in 15 separate issues from 1802 onwards. His book details both the architecture of private projects, which were on the whole quite luxurious, and proposals for integrating them into sites. The book was withdrawn in 1837, then in 1842 and 1847. Provenance: bookplate of bookseller Jacques Laget.
