This work initiated the research that would lead Choisy to publish Histoire de l'architecture. It is characterized by the widespread use of axonometry, and by the idea of reducing Roman architecture to its structural dimension alone: two modernist biases that make Choisy one of the forerunners of twentieth-century architectural theory.
