Description

BLONDEL Le Nouveau Marché St Germain Paris, Dussillon, 1816. Large folio, 10 pp & XI plates (small brown stain to text). Full blue paper boards (corners broken and rounded, spine broken, stains) Working copy of the first edition of this rare work, which was republished by Bance in 1825. The St-Germain market has existed since the Middle Ages, first as a fairground close to the abbey, then as a permanent building, attested to on late 18th-century Parisian plans. The building having been destroyed by fire in 1806, Blondel proposed its reconstruction on the historic site, which he undertook between 1813 and 1816. The author of the present work details the considerations that went into the founding choices of his project, and recounts the technical difficulties encountered with the foundations. Interesting both for its historical value and as a publication given by an architect to promote his work.
