Son of the Grand Master of Artillery of France and Catherine de Bourbon, Antoine d'Estrées (before 1529-1609) was a gentleman of the Duke of Alençon, when Henri III appointed him governor of Pierrefond (1575), seneschal and then governor of Boulonnais (1575-78). Chevalier de St-Michel, he was created Chevalier du St-Esprit in the 1st promotion at the Order's creation in 1578, and obtained from the King the erection of his seigneury of Cœuvres into a marquisate (1585), as well as the lieutenancy general in Picardy in March 1586. When Henri III was assassinated, he immediately offered his services to the King of Navarre, and settled in his government at La Fère. His defense of Noyon against Mayenne in 1593 led to his appointment as Lieutenant General of Paris and the Ile de France. One of his daughters, Gabrielle, was Henri IV's famous mistress.

An Isoko Mask Isoko, Nigeria Mit Sockel / with base Holz, Rattan. H 38 cm. Provenienz: - Thierry Santos, Paris. - Galerie Alain & Abla Lecomte, Paris. - 2006: Westschweizer Privatsammlung. Ein Zertifikat der Galerie Lecomte (2006) wird dem Käufer ausgehändigt. Bei Sotheby's Paris (09.04.2022, "Living Contemporary", Lot 14) mit einer Schätzung von € 5'000-7'000 unverkauft. Eine identische (?) Maske wird von Philip M. Peek in "For Spirits and Kings - African art from the Paul and Ruth Tishman Collection" wie folgt beschrieben: 82. MASK FOR ERESE FESTIVAL Nigeria, Igbo-Isoko, Bendel State, Ase village Wood, raffa, cowrie sbells, brass tacks, H. 11¾ in. (29.8 cm.) 1940-60? This mask is virtually identical to one of three headdresses recorded in Ase, Bendel State, Nigeria, in 1971 (see fig. 30). The three are owned by Odiri, priest of Onye-uku-Ekukeni, the major clan deity for warfare. Fach mask is topped by a joined pair of unidentified animals further honoring the deity. Worn by masqueraders covered with feathers and colorful head scarves, such headdresses are the focus of the Erese festival celebrated each March to cleanse the town before other festivals can be held. This ceremony is properly known as Erese Okpokponso (from the Isoko kpo, "go," and Igbo nso, "forbidden," or "to move/drive away forbidden things"). The combination of Isoko and Igbo terms reflects Ase's complex history. The ancestors of Ase's founders left Benin centuries ago and gradually, over many generations, moved down the Niger River. Reaching the junction of the Niger and Ase rivers, two brothers went up the Ase and settled. The senior brother soon left to found what was to become the Isoko town of Aviara. For years Ase remained "junior" to Aviara, but later became affiliated with the powerful Ndosimili Igbo town of Abo. Ase now considers itself completely Igbo. A further reflection of the difficulty in tracing the origins of Niger delta and riverain communities is that Ekukeni quarter, where the creators of the Erese festival live, was settled by migrants from Erohwa, an ancient clan now linked to the Isoko but predating even the Ijo in the western Niger delta. The imperial hunt of the Qing dynasty was an annual rite of the emperors of China during the Qing dynasty. It was first organized in 1681 by the Kangxi Emperor at the Imperial hunting grounds at Mulan in modern-day Weichang Manchu and Mongol Autonomous County, near what would become the summer residence of the Qing emperors at Chengde. Starting in 1683 the event was held annually at Mulan during the autumn, lasting up to a month. The Qing dynasty hunt was a synthesis of earlier Chinese and Inner Asian hunting traditions, particularly those of the Manchus and Mongols. The emperor himself participated in the hunt, along with thousands of soldiers, imperial family members, and government officials. Kangxi's son, the Yongzheng Emperor, never hunted at Mulan as an emperor, though he had done so as a prince. Yongzheng regretted his failure to continue the custom, and instructed his sons to maintain their hunting skills. The next emperor to hunt at Mulan was Qianlong, who revived and expanded his grandfather's tradition. Mulan held deep significance for Qianlong, who erected a stele there in 1751. The Qianlong Emperor held over forty hunts in his reign. To protect him from potentially dangerous game such as bears or tigers, the emperor would be accompanied by a number of troops such as the ‘tiger-gun brigade’. If a tiger was caught, the emperor usually killed it personally, as part of the spectacle demonstrating the bravery and martial skill of the imperial lineage. In 1692, the Kangxi Emperor killed a bear by wounding it with an arrow and finishing it off with a pike. Under the Kangxi Emperor, tiger hunts were conducted by having captive animals brought in cages, and then releasing them into the hunting grounds.
