Description
A sabre of a guardsman under Pope Pius IX, 1846 - 1878 Curved single-edged blade à la Montmorency, double fullered at the point (blade darkened, point broken off), the upper half with decorative etching (traces of gilding) with trophies, papal insignia and the inscriptions "VIVA PIO IX" and "VIVA L'ITALIA". Gilt, non-ferrous metal knuckle-bow hilt (knuckle-bow end missing) with lion's head pommel and guard plate in rich relief, brown horn grip (without wire winding). Partially damaged, signs of age. Length 99 cm. Very rare sabre, easily improved by restoration. Pius IX (1792 - 1878), born Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti, was the 255th pope from 1846 to 1878. Condition: III
