Body covered with black cloth, leather lid, leather peak, surrounding golden pattern border, double eagle emblem of gray metal (glued on) with applied number "3", inserted rose with red enameled crown (chipped). Purple silk lining (cloth label "Josef Blahen / Pribram"), brown leather sweatband. Without chin strap. Slightly damaged, signs of age. Condition: II - III

Das sehr seltene Photo zeigt Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) mit anderen Expeditionsteilnehmern und den Schiffskapitän mit weiteren Besatzungsmitgliedern während der Überquerung des Victoria Sees von Fort Florence nach Kampala. - Die Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition, die zum Schluss Afrika von Süd nach Nord durchquerte, wurde vom ehemaligen amerikanischen Präsidenten Theodore Roosevelt geleitet und von der Smithsonian Institution finanziert. Geführt wurde die Gruppe von dem legendären Jäger und Fährtenleser Richard John Cuninghame. Weitere Expeditionsteilnehmer waren u.a. der australische Scharfschütze Leslie Tarlton, drei amerikanische Naturforscher, Edgar Alexander Mearns, ein pensionierter Chirurg der US-Armee, der Präparator Edmund Heller von der Stanford University und der Säugetierforscher John Alden Loring sowie Roosevelts 19-jähriger Sohn Kermit. Die Expedition führte u.a. über Mombasa, Britisch-Ostafrika (Kenia) nach Belgisch-Kongo (Demokratische Republik Kongo) und entlang des Nils nach Khartum im Sudan. Für die Smithsonian Institution und für das American Museum of Natural History in New York wurden etwa 11.397 Tiere erlegt und gefangen, mehrere tausend Pflanzen zusammengetragen und eine umfangreiche ethnographische Sammlung angelegt. - Etwas berieben u. leicht zerkratzt, Karton stockfleckig. - Dabei: 4 weitere Albuminabzüge mit Aufnahmen von Einwohnern und Hütten des Dorfs Busi, Fort Florence u. Mounted on cardboard. - Very rare photograph showing Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) with other expedition members, and the ship's captain with other crew members during the crossing of Lake Victoria from Fort Florence to Kampala. - The Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition, which finally crossed Africa from south to north, was led by former American President Theodore Roosevelt and funded by the Smithsonian Institution. The group was led by legendary hunter and tracker Richard John Cuninghame. Other expedition members included Australian sharpshooter Leslie Tarlton, three American naturalists, Edgar Alexander Mearns, a retired U.S. Army surgeon, Stanford University taxidermist Edmund Heller, and mammalogist John Alden Loring, and Roosevelt's 19-year-old son Kermit. Among other destinations, the expedition traveled via Mombasa, British East Africa (Kenya) to Belgian Congo (Democratic Republic of the Congo) and along the Nile to Khartoum in Sudan.
