Oil on canvas. Signed. Framed free-standing. - Minor colour abrasions in places along the edges as traces of framing. Lightly soiled and yellowed in places. Canvas doubled. No visible retouches under UV light. Overall good. Atmospheric landscape scene with impasto-expressive brushstrokes. - Max Clarenbach began his studies at the Düsseldorf Academy of Art at the age of 13 where he attended the landscape class of Eugen Dücker (1841-1916). In 1917 he succeeded his teacher, a position he was to fulfil for almost three decades. The atmospheric depictions of the Rhine floodplains in their seasonally changing moods are among the most influential works in his oeuvre. With an late Impressionist creativity, a nuanced view of a landscape in which a village is embedded is shown in our picture. The scene is painted by Clarenbach in rich colours, a light palette and a loose brushstroke and illustrates Clarenbach's preference for landscapes that appear highly influenced due to the weather and seasons.
