Description

A Bornean mandau with silver-inlaid blade, circa 1900 Typically shaped single-edged blade with floral decoration richly inlaid in silver on the obverse side. Grip with fine rattan winding, finely carved, forked pommel of polished stag horn with hair trim. Finely carved wooden scabbard with rattan bands on the obverse side. An engraved mother-of-pearl inlay on the obverse side. On the back a sheath of tree bark (defective), the inserted by-knife with a short curved blade on a long wooden shaft with a carved stag horn pommel. Attached braided carrying strap. Length 64 cm.
