A Japanese tanto, circa 1450 Blade Hira Tsukuri, Mu Zori, Hoso Suguha Hamon, Boshi and Hada plastered, Kizu on Mune and Ji. Nakago ubu, corroded with a mekugi ana and kiri-yasurime copper habaki, inscribed "Yasutsugu" (c. 1452, 20 p. YAS 513). The hamon shape suggests Omi Yasutsugu. Corroded sukashi tsuba. Koshirae, late Edo period, fuchi from Shibuichi with decoration of bridge and boat, kashira with decoration of temple and rocks, each partly gilt, one shishi menuki, defective brown binding over seed. Rubbed nigurome kotsuka with waves and shidori. Worn black ishimelacksaya with iron dragon kojiri. Length K/M 28.6 cm, total length 49 cm. Condition: III +

A KOTO TANTO IN KOSHIRAE, THE BLADE ATTRIBUTED TO SHIMADA, WITH NBTHK CERTIFICATE A KOTO TANTO IN KOSHIRAE, THE BLADE ATTRIBUTED TO SHIMADA, WITH NBTHK CERTIFICATE Unsigned, the blade attributed to Shimada Japan, the blade early 16 th century, Muromachi period (1333-1573), the mounting Edo period (1615-1868) The blade: The sugata is hira-zukuri with iori mune, forged in itame hada with a flamboyant choji midare hamon with pronounced nioi and some ashi. The blade with horimono to each side, one with gomabashi and the other with a ken sword terminating in a groove. The nakago with one mekugi-ana and a kuri jiri. The gilt-metal habaki with diagonal file marks. The mounting: The iron tsuba of mokko gata form, with two hitsu, and finely worked to each side with a ferocious dragon amid swirling clouds. The parcel-gilt copper fuchi decorated with a band of prunus blossoms. The tsuka covered in rayskin and wrapped with dark-blue textile. The parcel-gilt and silvered metal menuki in the form of karashishi. The saya lacquered with lustrous roiro. With an NBTHK Kicho (‘Precious’) certificate attributing the blade to Shimada from the Koto period. NAGASA 29.8 cm, LENGTH 58.5 cm (the koshirae) Condition: Overall good condition with minor wear, the blade with a tiny shallow chip near the tang, some ware, little fukure, the saya with minor age cracks and light scratches.

The hamon is notare in nioi-deki, ending in omaru boshi. The hada is mokume-masame. The mumei (unsigned) nakago with two mekugi-ana, the tip is kiri. The wood saya with a sticker reading ‘MURAMASA’. NAGASA 48 cm, LENGTH 67.5 cm (total) Condition: Good condition with minor wear and traces of use, the blade with scattered small fukure and ware. The tip with a tiny nick. Provenance: Hungarian private collection.

KANEHISA: A TANTO IN SHIRASAYA WITH INSCRIBED BLADE KANEHISA: A TANTO IN SHIRASAYA WITH INSCRIBED BLADE By Kanehisa, signed Kanehisa Japan, Edo period (1615-1868) The blade with hira-zukuri and maru mune, the hamon is sugu with nie and nioi, the hada is masame. One side of the blade with a half-length bohi and a narrower ridge (soehi) below a horimono in bon script representing Fudo Myo-o. The habaki is gilt. The nakago with one mekugi-ana and kuri jiri. The wood saya of an attractive grain and color with bone fittings. The mei reads KANEHISA. NAGASA 16 cm, LENGTH 27.3 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and traces of use. Provenance: Hungarian collection.
