Two Indian leather shields, 19th century Curved leather shield with a slightly flared rim, four iron shield bosses, padding on the inside and two textile grip straps. Leather somewhat dry, cracks in places. Diameter 53 cm. Another shield of lacquered leather, with four tinned shield bosses, padding on the inside and two textile grip straps. Lacquered surface with chips to the edge of the shield, six perforations on one side. Diameter 37 cm. Condition: II - III

Gänzlich auf unbeschnittenem Bütten gestaltete Sammlung von 15 teils selbstverfassten, teils zitierten Gedichten in sauberer Fraktur-Kalligraphie. Die auf zartem Chinapapier gefertigten Zeichnungen zeigen Vögel (10 Bilder), Schmetterlinge (5) und Pflanzen (1). Sie sind jeweils in aus zwei Buchseiten geschaffenen Passepartouts eingefasst. Die feingliedrigen Kompositionen erinnern stark an japanische Farbholzschnitte aus der Meiji-Zeit und stehen damit in der Tradition des im späten 19. Jahrhundert aufkommenden Japonismus in der westlichen Kunst. - Laut Vermerk auf dem Titelblatt "aufgemalt und abgeschrieben zu Nutz und Ergötzlichkeit einer wahrhaftigen Freundin freier Natur und der Berge". - Sehr vereinzelt kaum merklich stockfleckig. Insgesamt sehr gut erhalten mit leuchtenden Farben. Manuscript with splendid calligraphy and 16 original watercolour drawings. Cont. half leather with gilt spine, marbled boards and leather corners. - Collection of 15 partly self-penned, partly quoted poems in neat fracture calligraphy, entirely designed on untrimmed laid paper. The drawings, made on delicate China paper, depict birds (10 images), butterflies (5) and plants (1). They are each framed in passe-partouts created from two book pages. The delicate compositions are strongly reminiscent of Japanese woodblock prints from the Meiji period and are thus in the tradition of Japonism in Western art, which emerged in the late 19th century. - According to the note on the title page "painted and copied for the use and pleasure of a true friend of free nature and the mountains". - Very sporadic, hardly noticeable foxing.
