United Kingdom - SMITH (Charles Hamilton). Selections of ancient costume of Great Britain and Ireland, from the seventh to the sixteenth century, out of the collection in the possession of the author. London, William Bulmer, 1814. In-folio, [4] ff. pp. v-viii, and 63 aquatint plates engraved by L.A. Atkinson after the author's drawings, each captioned with a text leaf, [2] ff. Red half-basane with corners, smooth spine decorated (period binding). Small scuff marks on spine. First edition and first printing. The album should have only 60 plates; the number 63 is explained by the juxtaposition of two successive prints for certain subjects: plate 6 (King Edgar, and a youth of distinction), plate 35 (William Beauchamp, Lord Bergavenny), and 51 (King Henry VI at his devotions). The work is one of three suites of British costumes published by the atypical soldier Charles Hamilton Smith (1776-1859), also a collector and self-taught draughtsman. (Colas II, 2755.) A fine copy, despite the minor defects noted.
