A Congolese Nkisi magic figure and a large Kifwebe mask of the Songye Large, expressive Kifwebe mask with a strong comb and strongly protruding eyes and lips. Remains of paint. Bumped, traces of worm and termite infestation. Length approx. 73 cm. Comes with a magic figure made of hard, dark brown painted wood, decorated with animal fur (antelope?), antelope horn, sheet brass, brass bell, snakeskin and seeds of the African dream herb. Rubbed surfaces, small defects in the base area. Height 89 cm. Condition: III

Die Illustration zeigt die Frontansicht der Marktbude. - Der wenig bekannte Aussteller W. Sühring reiste in den späten 1880er Jahren wohl vor allem durch den Norden Deutschlands. Das "Volksmuseum", wie Sühring seine Ausstellung nennt, bestand aus einer Vielzahl mechanisierter Wachsfiguren von historischen, zeitgenössischen oder mythischen Charakteren, Szenen und Figuren. Hierunter eine Schlangenbeschwörerin, Rotkäppchens Begegnung mit dem Wolf in den Wäldern, eine Eisbären und Wolfsjagd auf dem Eismeer, u.a. - Papierbedingt zart und sehr gleichmäßig gebräunt, mehrfach geglättete Falzen, 1 kl. Einriss, insgesamt jedoch sehr gut erhalten. Circus - Variety - Touring Museum - Broadsheet with woodcut illustration and border. - Rare broadsheet advertising a traveling wax museum. The illustration shows the front view of the booth. - The little-known exhibitor W. Sühring presumably traveled mainly through northern Germany in the late 1880s. The "Volksmuseum", as Sühring calls his exhibition, consisted of a large number of mechanized wax figures of historical, contemporary or mythical characters, scenes and figures. Among them a snake charmer, a polar bear and a wolf hunt on the polar sea, a.o. - Delicate and very evenly browned due to the paper, smoothed folds, 1 small tear, altogether however very well preserved.
