A Japanese scroll painting, 19th century Watercolor on paper. Depiction of a muscular man, sitting with bent legs on an undefined floor. He is vigorously pulling his top off his chest and looking down at a glowing Buddha on his stomach. The sitter could be a Kongorikishi guardian or the incarnate Mahakala, who protects Buddha or Buddhism. On a dark blue silk ground, wooden scrollwork. Missing areas and tears in places. Measures approx. 96 x 205 cm when unrolled (or 125 x 205 with staff). Condition: II - III
