Utamaro created a series of five ukiyo-e prints called Kasen Koi no Bu (歌撰恋之部) in 1793-94, of which the present motif is one. It depicts a lady looking forward expectantly and holding a scroll in front of her, which she has just removed from her kimono. This is probably a love letter. Framed in a passepartout.
