Description

A Roman amber fig hand, 1st - 3rd century, in 19th century setting, and two amulets, 19th century 1) Amber amulet with thumb pinched between index and middle finger, bangle behind it. The slightly porous and weathered surface of the amber clearly indicates that it was found in the ground. The fig hand is a common motif in Roman amulets, made from a wide variety of materials. Pre- and protohistoric finds were often set as amulets in the 19th century, as in this case with a rectangular silver setting with fine incised decoration. Eyelet with ring at the top. Visible length of the Roman fig hand 29 mm. Total length with 19th century silver setting (without eyelet and ring) 5 cm. With two further 19th century amulets: 2) Diamond-shaped bronze plaque with sawn-out motif: horseshoe with farrier's tool. Eyelet with ring at the top, eyelets with horseshoe miniatures attached to rings on the sides and bottom. Length 5.6 cm. 3) Silver guilder, Württemberg 1841, on the 25th anniversary of King Wilhelm's reign. Soldered eyelet and ringlet at the top, small eyelets at the sides and bottom, with miniature horses. The guilder heavily reworked and gilded with traces of the polishing pin in the fields. Length 6 cm. Probably a matching ensemble of lucky charms from the equestrian world of the mid-19th century. Provenance: Southwest German private collection, taken over from the estate of the father, acquired by him in the art trade between 1970 and 2000. Condition: I - II
