An Italian bronze lamp based on an antique model with cross and dove as a handle, Grand Tour souvenir for a visit of the catacombs in Rome, early 19th century Bronze oil lamp with a large hole in the mirror, the rim decorated with a zigzag motif. The snout on the rim with a star-like jagged edge. The handle is decorated with a cross and a dove. Typical souvenir for visitors to the catacombs. Provenance: Brought from Rome around 1820 by Sibylle Mertens-Schaaffhausen, ancestor of the current owner. Sibylle Schaffhausen (1797 - 1857) was an important collector and archaeologist who, among other things, amassed an extraordinary collection of gems. She enjoyed the esteem of numerous prominent personalities of her time. Today, parts of her collections are kept in important world-class museums. Condition: I -
