A solid lunula-shaped fitting with stylized water birds, late Bronze Age, 10th - 9th century B.C. Solid fitting in the shape of a lunula. The front with three striking, phalera-like circular eyes made of raised circular lines with a spike in the center, with crossed incised lines in between. Parallel incised lines at the tips of the lunula with incised angular motifs in between. Perforated square in the center to accommodate a strong pin. The perforation is extended at the top by a short cylinder, from which two strikingly outward-facing, angled projections emerge. These were decorated at the top with stylized heads of waterfowl with broad beaks, but these are broken off on both sides. Elaborate showpiece fitting, probably from a Late Bronze Age chariot (possibly from an axle nail that was passed through a bronze hub cap). Exceptionally beautiful, shiny green patina. Slight corrosion scars in the tips of the lunula. Provenance: Munich private collection, acquired in the 1990s in the southern German art trade. Condition: II - III

Fein gesticktes Rangabzeichen eines chinesischen Zivilbeamten aus Seide, vermutlich aus dem 19. Jahrhundert. Das Madarin-Quadrat (chin.: Buzi) wurde auf der Vorder- und Rückseite der offiziellen Robe getragen, um den jeweiligen Rang zu kennzeichnen. Im Zentrum steht ein Reiher mit ausgebreiteten Schwingen umgeben von Wellen. Der Vogel war das Symbol des sechsten Ranges der Beamten am Hof der Qing-Dynastie. Das Motiv ist in der Mitte geteilt, wobei der Vogel auf seiner linken, leicht nach oben gerichteten Seite zu einer roten Sonne aufblickt, was darauf hindeutet, dass es sich um einen Teil der Vorderseite der Robe eines männlichen Beamten handelt. - Etwas angestaubt und vereinzelt mit gelösten Fäden. Farben schön erhalten. China - Silk embroidery with mandarin square. Qing dynasty (1614-1911). In brocade frame and framed under glass (unopened, frame with defects). - Finely embroidered silk rank badge of a Chinese civil servant, probably from the 19th century. The madarin square (chin.: buzi) was worn on the front and back of the official robe to indicate the respective rank. In the centre is a heron with outstretched wings surrounded by waves. The bird symbolised the sixth rank of officials at the Qing dynasty court. The motif is divided in the centre, with the bird on its left, slightly upward-facing side looking up at a red sun, indicating that it is part of the front of a male official's robe. - Somewhat worn and with occasional loosened threads. Colours beautifully preserved.

Blattmaße je ca. 15 x 19 cm. Meist mit Beschriftungen in englischer und lateinischer Sprache. - Die Blätter scheinen einem professionellen ornithologischen Zeichenalbum zu entstammen. Enthalten sind sowohl europäische als auch außereuropäische Arten, es überwiegen dabei Enten- und Hühnervögel. Dargestellt sind unter anderem ein Kernbeißer, ein Halsbandfrankolin, Löffelenten, Persische Sandhühner und Büschelenten. Die Vögel werden meist in ihrer natürlichen Umgebung gezeigt, einige Blätter bilden zudem auch das Gelege ab. Einige der Zeichnungen scheinen inspiriert von dem erstmals zwischen 1851-1857 erschienen Werk "A History of British Birds" von Rev. F.O. Morris. - Verso vereinzelt mit Spuren früherer Montierung. Pen and watercolour on chamois-coloured paper. - Mostly with captions in English and Latin. - The sheets appear to come from a professional ornithological drawing album. They contain both European and non-European species, with a predominance of duck and partridge birds. Among others, a hawfinch, a collared francolin, spoonbills, Persian sandgrouse and tufted ducks are depicted. The birds are mostly shown in their natural environment, with some sheets also depicting the clutch of eggs. Some of the drawings appear to have been inspired by the work "A History of British Birds" by Rev. F.O. Morris, first published between 1851-1857. Morris. - Partly with traces of earlier mounting on verso. Some mounted on backing paper. Some inconspicuous browning in margins and occasional minor brownstaining. Overall a very well-preserved and varied collection.
