Description

An iron sabre, North Eastern Black Sea region, period of the Khazar Khaganate, 8th - 9th century A.D. Approx. 1.7 cm wide and 8.5 cm long tang (above the quillons), with a solid forged quillons, 10 cm wide and 1.5 cm wide at the highest point in the middle, diamond-shaped in plan view, slid onto it up to the base of the blade. The center of the quillons is extended upwards and downwards to a blunt point. Remains of a mounted ricasso made of sheet iron below the quillons. The blade of the sword has a 5 mm wide ridge on one side in the upper and middle area. There is only a wide bevel towards the edge. The slightly backward curved point of approx. 15.5 cm in length is double-edged with a central ridge. Expertly restored. Surface with light rust pitting and minimal nicks on the edges. Very good iron substance. Minor remnants of the wooden handle remain on the tang. Total length 83 cm. Provenance: South German private collection, acquired at the beginning of the millennium in the South German art trade. Condition: II - III
