Description

An early Byzantine pilgrim's bottle, mold-shaped ceramic, 6th - 7th century A bottle composed of two mold-shaped halves with a round body. Above it a cylindrical neck with a central rib and an outward-pointing, bulging rim lip. Starting from the central rib, two ribbon-shaped handles on the sides, which lead down to the shoulder of the bottle. On one side of the round body is a cross on a mountain (Golgotha), below which is probably the opening of a rock tomb (tomb of Christ). On the side, two palm branches symbolize Christ's victory over death. On the other side a medallion with a bearded bust (Christ or saint), framed at the bottom by two branches, with difficult-to-interpret inscription at the top. Mica-rich, reddish clay with dark spots. Minimally rubbed in places on the heights, otherwise in immaculate, intact condition. Height 10.5 cm. Provenance: Thuringian private collection, acquired in the southern German art trade at the beginning of the millennium. Condition: I - II
