Description

Iron padlock with chain, Roman, 2nd - 3rd century. Cylindrical lock body made of a curved sheet metal wall and two round sheet metal covers at the top and bottom. The sheet metal covers near the wall are fixed on the inside with four long rivets or nails, two of them with rivet heads at the top and bottom, two with rivet heads on one side only and with a spike bent outwards on the other. Elongated keyhole on one side, rectangular iron loop on the other, through which a 6.6 cm long chain link is passed. Attached to this chain link is a chain with shorter links, of which eight links with a length of 5.6 cm to 5.8 cm are preserved. Parts of the locking mechanism are preserved in the lock cylinder. The rear sheet metal cover with a small break-out on the side. Surface slightly corroded, otherwise in very good condition. Diameter of the lock cylinder 5.4 cm, height (with rivet heads and iron loop) 5.2 cm. Preserved length of the chain 49 cm. Condition: II - III
