Description

[CHAMPAGNE]. CAMUSAT (Nicolas). Promptuarium Sacrarum Antiquitatum Tricassinae Diocesis. Troyes, Natalem Moreau, 1610. Fort in-8, contemporary full ecru vellum, old trace of laces, handwritten title on spine; title-[5]ff.-436ff.-[8]ff., (lacks bl. sup. guard, ff. 17 and 93 partly torn off, lacks f. 92, qq. pagination errors). Old ms bookplate (Duprat, seigneur de Viviers, près Bar sur Seine, 1782). Vellum a little stained, one corner uncovered, very slight spotting on a few pages, otherwise in good condition. Good impression, decorated with vignettes and lamp-ends by Noël Moreau, known as Lecoq. Text mainly in Latin, some parts in French. 150 leaves are devoted to the catalog of the bishops of Troyes, about 200 leaves to historical mixtures, RARE, unknown to Techener. Nicolas Camusat, canon of Troyes cathedral, was born in Troyes in 1575 and died there in 1665. He had saved from imminent loss several manuscripts sold to a papermaker as useless by a prior of the Jacobins of Troyes, who was unaware of their price. Once in possession of these historical treasures, he set about publishing them. (Socard, Hommes célèbres de l'Aube p. 74). A fine copy.
