Contemporary midnight blue half calf, smooth spine decorated with romantic designs, with small white vellum corners. Binding in very good condition (spine very slightly faded). A few very light freckles on the first 3 leaves, one page artfully restored in volume 1, without missing, a small marginal stain on one page, not serious. Discreet stamp of a former owner on the title pages, and in one margin of each volume. Exemplary, free of any foxing, in period binding. Without the occasional catalog leaf. A very rare first edition of one of STENDHAL's two most famous novels, in rare condition.

Contemporary empire green half calf with corners, smooth spine with romantic motifs, black title-pieces. Spine uniformly soiled, otherwise excellent condition of binding and text (few light freckles in volume 2, really discreet). Rare first edition, with a woodcut vignette by Henri Monnier on each title. This is a rare copy, virtually free of any foxing, and in a contemporary binding. Without the warning leaf mentioned in some copies. One of the most sought-after first editions of French literature...
