Large in-8, bound in red half-cottoned half-chagrin, spine ribbed, decorated with gilt fleurons, on green morocco parts with gilt title and head, marbled boards, cover boards preserved. Illustrated with 80 drawings by JEANNIOT, reproduced in the text, and 10 original etchings, including a portrait of the author. This text inspired many artists, including Ibels. This copy contains 4 original pencil drawings in preparation for this edition: full-length judge (at the head of the preface), bust of Elisa (after the preface), woman in the cobbler's shop (p. 239) and a study of Elisa on a swing pushed by her military lover (free leaf). The drawings are unsigned. A fine copy.
