[Francfort], Johannis Davidis Zunneri,1689, In-folio, contemporary full brown calf, 5-nerved spine, gilt title, gilt compartments decorated with gilt irons, (small old filing label at head of spine), speckled edges, title printed in red & black decorated with an engraved vignette, [1]f., 12 folding general tables followed by 112 double-page general tables, all mounted on tabs, 2 pp. handwritten index. (2nd ex. with stamp). Fine restoration of headpieces, small split at tail of upper spine, minor foxing on some tables, good condition. Rare first edition of this work giving the genealogy of the great French families. The copy bears the seal of the Order of Malta and comes from the library of Michel Jean Népomucène van der Maesen, who bought it in Cologne and added it to his library as "proof of his genealogy" (handwritten note), and from the Michel Wittock collection (armorial bookplate). First edition of this collection of four separately paginated texts on love and marriage, composed on the occasion of the second marriage of Jacob Cats, Flemish poet and statesman. Included are 14 poems on marriage, 9 by the great humanist Caspar Barleus (van Baerle), 1 by Jacob Cats, 4 by Cornelius Boyus; Jacob Lydius's treatise on matrimonial rites and divorce among various peoples. The work is dedicated to Elisabeth of Bohemia. It is decorated with a full-page portrait of her and 14 mid-page engravings. The illustration is by Crispin Van Queboorn, a Dutch draughtsman and engraver. Some of the figures bear his monogram. Bound at the beginning of the volume: CATS (Jacob): L'art du mariage.
