Description

LE LABOUREUR (J.). Les Mémoires de Messire Michel de Castelnau, seigneur de Mauvissière [...] avec [...] l'histoire généalogique de la maison de Castelnau [...] Bruxelles, Jean Léonard, 1731. 3 vol. in-fol. in modern half-basane (20th century), beige granite boards, 5-ribbed spine, gilt title, red edges; 2 portr. in front, [16]ff.-864pp.-[6]ff., 782pp.-[6]ff. and 560pp.-[1] ff. with general tabl. and engraved blazons in the text. Interesting memoirs on political and military events from 1559 to 1570, first printed in 1621, then in 1659, by Jean Le Laboureur (1623-1675). Michel de Castelnau (1518-1592), an impartial and truthful writer, wrote them during a stay in England. The work is one of the best available for the period it describes. Adorned with portrait-frontispieces by Castelnau-Mauvissière and his grandson (1620-1658), vignettes, culs-de-lampe and headpieces (some engraved by Gandavi, after Norbertus Heylbroeck), our ed. of 1731, the best and most complete, also contains: in volume I (page 837), the general history of du Bosc d'Esmendreville, in volume II, general information on a large number of families in the kingdom and, in volume III, the general history of the house of Castelnau and several allied houses: Bochetel, Morvillier, Gaillard, La Chastre, Morogues, Perreaux, Rouxel-Médavy, Rochechouart, with nearly 400 engraved coats of arms. Our copy was severely damaged by water infiltration. It has been entirely restored: the damaged ff. have been skilfully reinforced, the title and the fronts have been carefully reassembled on boards, all "as new" in a modern half-binder with nicely patinated leather. A good set.
