Description

SOREL (Charles). La Science Universelle. A Paris, chez Toussaint Quinet, 1641-1647. Three volumes in-4, contemporary full vellum binding, handwritten title on spine; engraved portrait-front. in T. I, 381pp.-[1]p., 6pp-[1]f.-551pp., 7pp.[1]p.-384pp. Stamp repeated in 1st vol. Volume I: paper a little browned, small angular lack in margin of first 40 pages, small worm gallery in margin of several pages - Volume III: wetness on upper cover and in margin of pages, paper browned and a little weakened. Good overall, Volume II in very good condition. Tome I: la Science des choses corporelles - Tome II: De l'Etre et des Propriétés des choses corporelles - Tome III: De l'Usage et Perfection des choses. Rare edition during the author's lifetime. Charles Sorel, sieur de Souvigny, was a 17th-century French novelist and writer. La Science Universelle, (1st volume first published in 1634, 2nd in 1637 and 3rd in 1641), is probably the work to which Sorel devoted the most work and which was closest to his heart, as evidenced by the chapter he devoted to it in La Bibliothèque Française, as well as the multiple editions he commissioned. These first three volumes were republished with a fourth in 1644, entitled De l'Usage des Idées, ou de l'origine des Sciences & des Arts, & de leur Enchainement. Du Langage, de l'Écriture, & des Chiffres.
