The day after the author of J'accuse! was convicted of libel. "You are now consecrated. You continue the series of great French writers who have put their pen to the service of what they believed to be the truth, and provoked the manifestation of light": Courier, Béranger, Lamennais, Charles Hugo; "now you are French by right, for this recent persecution has made you the fellow-citizen of your illustrious predecessors in the realm of the act and the idea [...], there is one imprescriptible right in the writer, and that is to formulate, in the presence of the events he witnesses, the cry of his conscience"... A copy of a draft of Le Rêve is enclosed.

With 9 color compositions by Henry DETOUCHE: cover, table and each of the 7 deadly sins. Contemporary empire half-maroquin with corners, smooth spine, bradel, covers preserved, gilt head. Binding signed DURVAND. Spine and upper board slightly oiled, some rubbing. Excellent condition inside (two discreet freckles in the margin of one engraving). Unpublished poetry by Edmond Haraucourt, Jules de Marthold, Francis de Croisset, Marc Legrand, Emile Verhaeren, Henri de Régnier and André Fontanas. Each sin is introduced by a marginal ornament subtly referring to it (Peacock feather for Pride, Pope's coin or Herbe aux écus for Avarice, Anthurium for Lust, Birds gorging on cherries for Gluttony, Thistle for Wrath, etc.). These elements, in prints of various monochrome tones, also illustrate the poetry inspired by the various sins opposite the full-page engraving. A very fine achievement

VERY NICE PAINTING "MME À LA PEINTURE" by Edmé Emile LABORNE (1837-1913) Pastel on paper, signed lower right, framed under glass. Size: 62.5 x 35 cm (view) A former student at the Lycée Henri-IV in Paris, Edmé-Émile Laborne wrote a thesis for his law degree in 1859, entitled Du louage d'ouvrage et d'industrie. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under marine painter Jules Noël and painter Eugène Lacoste. He exhibited at the Salon from 1865 to 1890. A painter of urban views and landscapes, his favorite subjects were the Normandy coast and the Loire Valley. His beach and harbor landscapes are similar to those of Eugène Boudin. The posthumous sale of his studio took place at the Hôtel Drouot in Paris on December 19, 1927. On this occasion, the Journal des débats politiques et littéraires wrote on December 15, 1927: "[...] a consummate colorist, he added to a real accuracy of vision a real gift for rendering the various effects of light. In his compositions of dense ensembles, there is not a detail, or even a point of scenery, that escapes him, and he excels, moreover, in rendering every movement, attitude and physiognomy5[...]".
