These kinds of cylindrical vases served several purposes. Wine, for example, was put into them to be refreshed. There is one of this type in the Lombez church, a drawing of which I have given in the furniture [Dictionnaire raisonné du mobilier français...], which serves as a baptismal font. It's an object that shouldn't be lost, and if your friend doesn't want to keep it, he should sell it to the Musée de Cluny"... He adds: "The Vercingétorix of Clermont is just a duck".The letter was sent by Aimé Millet to his friend Henri Dumesnil, with a note a.s. on the back. An attached note indicates that it refers to a bronze cup found in Puiseaux.We enclose 2 l.a.s. addressed to Dumesnil by Achille Oudinot (1869, about Corot) and Constant Troyon (1860).
