Description

Eugène VIOLLET-LE-DUC (1814-1879) architect. L.A.S., August 14, 1863, [to Aimé Millet]; 1page in-8. About a vat of which he had been sent a stamp: "a 13th century vat, Italian work. These kinds of cylindrical vases served several purposes. Wine, for example, was put into them to be refreshed. There is one of this type in the Lombez church, a drawing of which I have given in the furniture [Dictionnaire raisonné du mobilier français...], which serves as a baptismal font. It's an object that shouldn't be lost, and if your friend doesn't want to keep it, he should sell it to the Musée de Cluny"... He adds: "The Vercingétorix of Clermont is just a duck".The letter was sent by Aimé Millet to his friend Henri Dumesnil, with a note a.s. on the back. An attached note indicates that it refers to a bronze cup found in Puiseaux. We enclose 2 l.a.s. addressed to Dumesnil by Achille Oudinot (1869, about Corot) and Constant Troyon (1860).
