HAITI. Alexandre Sabès, known as Alexandre PÉTION (1770-1818) Haitian independence fighter and revolutionary, first President of the Republic of Haiti. L.S., Port-au-Prince April 4, 1816, to the Principal Administrator of Jacmel; 1page small in-4, letterhead Republic of Hayti, Alexandre Petion, President of Haiti, address with ms countersignature (under glass). He invites the Citizen Administrator to "make Colonel Jean Jacques Hector des Cultures du Sale Trou count, as a gratuity, a sum of fifty gourdes in money; this sum will be allocated to you as a good expense"... Beside his signature, ink stamp Republic of Haiti, and apostille a.s. by Pierre-Étienne Garraud, acknowledging having received the sum in question on June 5, 1816 for Colonel Jean Jacques. On verso, visa of the principal administrator for payment (Jacmel June 1, 1816).
