Description

WAR 1939-1945. 35 photographs taken at Stalag III B, Fürstenberg-sur-Oder (now Eisenhüttenstadt), 1940-1944. Interesting account of prisoners' occupations in a stalag.Over 50,000 French POWs and some 4,000 Soviet prisoners were incarcerated in the camp at Fürstenberg-sur-Oder, near the Polish border. A theater troupe and an orchestra were formed, and were soon able to perform plays and musical revues. The female roles, which could not be cut out of the plays without rendering them incomprehensible, were taken by transvestite prisoners. Exceptional set of 35 photographs, most of them taken during performances by these amateur artists between 1940 and 1944. These are silver prints, the majority (21) in postcard format (8.5 x 13.5 cm), 8 in 8.5 x 11.5 format and 6 in 7 x 10 cm format. Nearly all have the Stalag stamp on the reverse. Some include a few lines of correspondence. They were freely addressed to the family of a prisoner present on many of them, Gilbert Huntzinger, matricule 20198. Attached are 3 letters from Gérard Huntzinger to his parents, written on forms provided by the camp administration.
