Notes for La Femme du XVIIIe siècle (1862) based on the mélanges of Mme Necker, the letters of Mme Roland, the works of Diderot and Marivaux, etc.We note, in Jules de Goncourt's hand, the first pencil draft of a text on Nattier: "Seated gloriously in theatrical poses, princesses breathe I know not what robust voluptuousness. [...] They are no longer Regency deities, but eighteenth-century women, with their deep baskets, their thin, ironic lips, their thinking physiognomy, their meditative foreheads. [...] It goes as far as tenderness and heartbreak"...
