First edition of this fundamental treatise by Champollion (1790-1832), published two years after the famous Lettre à Dacier and printed at public expense. In it, the Egyptologist presents the results of his research into hieroglyphic writing, which he describes as a complex system that is at once figurative, symbolic and phonetic (p. 327). Illustrated with a total of 48 lithographed plates. Stamp and cachet of M. de Breuvery in Bagatelle, Calvados: is this the traveler and author of the book on Egypt and Turkey published in 1836? Small hole deleting two letters on folio L4. Some foxing, slight wetness on the edge of the title. Rust stains on leaves 327-330, brown stain on plate II. CHAMPOLLION (Jean-François). Dictionnaire égyptien en écriture hiéroglyphique ; publié d'après les manuscrits autographes [...] par M. Champollion Figeac. Paris, Firmin Didot frères, 1841. Small folio, red half-chagrin, spine decorated (modern binding). First edition of this famous dictionary, a work that synthesizes all Champollion's research and work on the ancient writing of the Egyptians. The Dictionary, entirely autographed from the author's manuscripts, was published posthumously by Champollion-Figeac, the elder brother of the discoverer of the Rosetta Stone. After rejecting traditional typographical printing methods [...] the publishers opted for an original technique combining typography and lithography (Jammes, Les Didot, n°174). Ex-libris and wet stamp on title Pierre Prudon. A very fine, well-established copy.

Paris, Typographie de Firmin Didot frères, 1836 [-1841]. Small folio, bradel purple half-percaline (period binding). Posthumous first edition. Together with the Dictionnaire égyptien, published a few years later, the Grammaire égyptienne represents the synthesis of Champollion's discoveries and his work on deciphering Egyptian hieroglyphs. In addition to its considerable historical and scientific importance, it is also of great editorial interest: faced with the technical problem of reproducing the hieroglyphs inserted throughout the text, Firmin-Didot and Champollion-Figeac had to opt for a printing method combining typography and lithography. Spine faded, covers bumped.

Some brown spots.
