Description

Thomas BUGEAUD (1784-1849) Marshal of France. 2 L.A.S., Paris and Blidah February 14 and April 23, 1841 to his friend Louis d'Esclaibes, retired colonel at Chalancey (Haute-Marne); 6pages in-4, and 2pages in-4 headed Government-General of Algeria with address. ParisFebruary 14. Before leaving for Algeria, where he has been ordered "to press on with the war against Abd-el-Kader and not to listen to any proposals on his part", Bugeaud recalls the Treaty of La Tafna and takes stock of the situation after the departure of his predecessor, Marshal Valée: "This way of occupying the country is deplorable. [...] Mine is a very difficult task. I have not done anything to be given it, I have done the opposite, for I have not let slip an opportunity to say in the gallery and everywhere that I regard Affrique as a plague on France. If Mr le Mal V. believes that I have worked to supplant him, he is completely mistaken"... Blidah April 23, 1841. Bugeaud praised the army, but not Valée: "I swear it was impossible for me to speak favorably of his way of waging war. It is better to say nothing than to praise what is bad, which I deplore [...] He left the army and me a disastrous legacy in Milinna, Medeah, Cherchell"... Enclosed is a reproduction of a bill from Charles Delescluze.
