Guillaume APOLLINAIRE (1880-1918). 7 autograph postcards, 6 signed with his real name "Wilhelm de Kostrowitzky" (or "W. Kostrowitzky", 1901-1902, to Mlle Émilie Gaillet, Paris; illustrated cards, addresses on spine, mounted on tabs in an in-12 volume with facing printed text, bound in black half-box, title in red on spine (D. Montecot). Beautiful set of postcards written during the poet's first stay in Germany, which was to have a profound influence on his work, particularly in the "Rhénanes" of Alcools, of which these cards are a kind of illustration.These charming cards, most of them in color, are addressed to Émilie Gaillet, sister of the journalist Ernest Gaillet, editor of Tabarin. [Apollinaire, who had not yet adopted his pseudonym, was then tutor to the daughter of the Viscountess de Milhau, and passionately in love with Annie Pleyden, the English governess who accompanied them to the Rhineland]. At the head of the volume, on the 3rd flyleaf, an astrological natal chart has been drawn ("Roma 25/8/1880 - 5 h"). A transcription is pasted opposite each chart.Trier August 25, 1901. In the margin of a hand-colored image of the ruins of the Kaiser's palace: "Didn't have time to come back. This is from Trier. It's the Moselle. Michaux left us in Luxembourg. Will write soon"... Honnef am Rhein 21 [September?]. In the margin of a view of the grounds of the Kurhaus (spa house): "I have left Neu Glück. Here I am in Honnef, the 'Nice Rhine'. It's a sick town, but a very pretty one, on the banks of the Rhine"... Siebengebirge September 28. Alongside a view of the town and the Seven Mountains, with a medallion of a donkey ride: "My dates are amazing, but the car goes faster than people walking; I hope you're all well! Here are the seven mountains in the depths of which I live, and I drink a glass of not-famous Rhine wine to your health"... Laach in the Eifel October 6. View of the abbey church in Laach: "by the lake. Best regards to all"... * Blankenberg am Sieg October 23. Under a view of the fortress and town of Blankenberg: "From here, you can see all the way to the town of Siegburg, which looks like Mont St Michel. I hope you are all well.
